    It began with a single dish: nikujaga, a hearty stew comprised of meat, potatoes, and vegetables simmered in a sweetened soy sauce. Closely associated with Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost prefecture, and considered yōshoku, a “Japanized” interpretation of Western cooking, the meal was what Akiyo Tani first prepared chef Nathan Lowey when the couple met in Edmonton over 10 years ago.

    Weird neighborhood - definitely a diamond in the rough. The ambience of the place is beautiful, the staff is super helpful and friendly, ready with recommendations (that ended up being superb). If it wasn't so far, I would be spending all my money here!

    If you are adventurous to get to a different part of town Japantown is transitioning. Homeless and drug problems are in the area. But if you look beyond that. This gem in Vancouver maybe your next spot to try the best Beef belly katsu sandwich in town 5*! Location is unusual. Parking on streets. Service is friendly. Decor brick walls with character with a stylish bar as the center of the restaurant. They support local artists. Good choice of drinks menu. Prices are high considering the location but perhaps quality ingredients and time to prep is the cost. Brought my kids along the enjoyed the Belly beef sandwich.

    One of my favourite restaurants in Vancouver hands down. The service is impeccable every single time and the food is just incredible. My favourites are the beef belly katsu sandwich (maybe my favourite sandwich in town?), the omurice, which is so comforting, as well as the crispy cheese onigiri with jalapeno mayo. I always tell my friends to go there and they all love the food too! :)

    You will not be disappointed with the omurice. You can choose beef sauce or curry sauce, both will please you!

    EDIT: The owner has responded to my feedback below. I understand that quality ingredients are more expensive, which is why I paid $33 for an order tonkatsu and onigiri. The problem is that their dine-in and UberEats photos showcase an item that is notably larger in portion than what I received. I'm a customer - I rely on photos, not a food scale, to properly represent the food that I purchase. Regardless, I'm disappointed that the owner responded rather unprofessionally to a review from someone who liked the food. If the response had been kinder, I would've given this place the benefit of the doubt. As it stands, there are other restaurants that offer better value and service, even if the ingredients they use are of slightly lesser quality. --- It might've been an off night for the restaurant, but I placed a fairly pricy order for a large portion Beef Belly Katsu ($26) and two onigiri ($3.50 each) based on the great reviews I'd read online. I received an order small enough to to fit in a sandwich-sized takeaway box: six tiny pieces of Katsu, a couple spoonfuls of side salad, and onigiri that were two or three small bites large at best. (See the dressing container in the middle for scale). I would chalk this up as my mistake, but I've ordered much cheaper Katsu menus from other places that offer double the portion size of what I received tonight.
